Some of highlighted mass casualties by (radical) Islam in four decades – 1971-2011 (updated Feb. 2012)

PS
Most Israeli casualties are innocent non-combatants. Most Arab “Palestinian” casualties are combatants and/or involved in violent attacks. Not to mention Arab-Islamic intentional routine in causing deaths on their side via human shields. Same goes to Hezbollah tactics.
In fact: IDF’s unparalleled record of sparing civilians in counter-terrorism operations.

Of course, that’s besides the last bloody decade of over 18,000 Islamic terror attacks since 9/11/2001.

Note: Baathist racist Arab tyrants like Saddam Hussein, used Islam and ‘anti-infidel’ ideology as well.

Islamofascism, the Internet, and the liberty contagion

Islamofascism, the Internet, and the liberty contagion | Richmond Times-Dispatch

By ROSS MACKENZIE
Published: February 20, 2011

On Egypt et al. let us be very clear.

Joy at the expansion of liberty — maybe even of democracy — is the only defensible sentiment. Any policy based on regime stability alone (as American foreign policy has been based too long) and thereby sanctioning tyranny, autocracy, one-party rule — is based on a premise not only indefensible but false.

The American left went bonkers over George W. Bush’s “Freedom Agenda,” which morphed into a “Freedom Doctrine.” Much of the left never accepted Bush as a legitimate president following the Supreme Court’s ruling about the Florida count in the 2000 election — and so the left could not accept anything he did. Yet it was he who insisted on encouraging democracy to germinate and grow in Iraq, in the hope it might spread throughout the Middle East.

So here we are, with freedom demonstrations from the southern Mediterranean littoral to beyond the Persian Gulf in, even, Iran. Is this apparent contagion a consequence — in a paradigmatic Internet hour — of infectious liberty, and correspondingly eloquent testimony to the fragility of autocratic regimes both Arab and Persian? At almost light-speed, the Internet may have disassembled fascist mullah rule across the Muslim world. Can you not hear — in the streets from Algiers to Tehran — liberty’s alluring song?

Maybe. And maybe not.

Islamofascism is our century’s Soviet communism. It seeks worldwide rule (a global caliphate) achieved and sustained through terror. In Iran, during the Carter administration, the shah fell. Freedom was thick in the air. Then Khomeini took over. Today freedom lies crushed, al-Qaida and the Taliban have sprouted, and Iran has satellized first Gaza (through Hamas) and now Lebanon (through Hezbollah). Syria remains in Iran’s orbit, and Turkey nudges seemingly ever closer.

Now in Egypt, during an Obama administration boasting a foreign policy no less befuddled, ideological, and incompetent than Carter’s, Mubarak is out. Were the Tahrir Square demonstrations genuinely spontaneous? Did his fall just happen, the demonstrators emboldened and enabled by the Internet? Or were those at Tahrir mere marionettes manipulated by an Islamofascist Muslim Brotherhood?

The ‘Hood traces back to a late 1920s founding and to early training by Nazi goons. Many of its alumni are — or were — al-Qaida stars. It helped establish Hamas, which it and Iran still sustain. The ‘Hood’s Supreme Guide, one Mohamed Badi, insists his group will “continue to raise the banner of jihad” against Jews — in his words the ‘Hood’s “first and foremost enemies.” He hates America, signifies for targeting U.S. troops, deplores “Zio-American arrogance and tyranny,” and seeks for Egypt creation of an Islamist state.

Such lovelies could have arranged the demonstrations in Cairo and across the Muslim world. Or they may have been as surprised by those demonstrations as the Obamians were. In either case, as Egypt’s most efficient, disciplined, and stabilizing (there’s that word again) force besides the military, the Muslim Brotherhood may be perfectly positioned to satellize Egypt — thereby advancing the Islamist territorial imperative, not to mention the Iranian dream.

Perhaps it’s true: The Internet may be a liberating tool unimagined just a generation ago. In its face, possibly not even the most ruthless of regimes can survive. Or perhaps in liberating a people subjugated in poverty (at $6,200 per year, per-capita Egyptian income ranks behind Bosnia, Jamaica and Cuba), the Internet liberates only to invite more terrifying subjugation by Islamist cut-throats — as with communist cadres — waiting to rush from the shadows into the corridors of power.

Liberty is of course the ultimate cause. Always. Before our eyes, we may be seeing it blossom — so greatly fertilized by the Internet — throughout the Muslim world. Then again, terrorizing Islamists may move in and capture these revolutions, converting them at the muzzles of guns, Maoist-like, into perversions of democracy that allow one man one vote — once.

That would be the worst sort of outcome. Still, it would enable a blame-mongering American left to unload once again on George Bush, its perceived illegitimate president who planted freedom in the Muslim world, for the perverted, illegitimate democracy his “Freedom Agenda” ultimately wrought.

JIHAD IN SPORTS – INCLUDING PLOTTING TO MASSACRE THOUSANDS OF THE INNOCENT ON SPORTS FIELDS

1972 MUNICH OLYMPICS MASSACRE 1972

Palestinian gunmen kill Israeli athletes
In the early 1970s the PLO is widely condemned for a series of hijackings bombings and killings most notably the kidnapping and killing of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. Arafats involvement in these events is unclear he refused to discuss such attacks though he denounced terrorism as a tactic.

OLYMPIC TEAM MURDER

Who murdered the athletes of the Israeli 1972 Olympic Team in Munich?
Black September Terrorist

What happened?

At 4:30AM on September 5, 1972, five Arab terrorists wearing track suits climbed the six and 1/2 foot fence surrounding the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany. Once inside, they were met by three others who had gained entrance with credentials. Within 24 hours, 11 Israelis, five terrorists, and a German policeman were dead.

Just before 5:00AM, the terrorists knocked on the door of Israeli wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg who opened the door, realized immediately something was wrong and shouted a warning. Weinberg and weightlifter Joseph Romano attempted to block the door while their members escaped, but they were killed by the terrorists. The Arabs then rounded up nine Israelis to hold as hostages.

At 9:30AM, the terrorists announced that they were Palestinian Arabs, and demanded that Israel release 234 Arab prisoners in Israeli jails and Germany release two German terrorist leaders imprisoned in Frankfurt. They also demanded their own safe passage out of Germany. After hours of negotiations, a deal was struck with German authorities and a trip to the NATO air base at Firstenfeldbruck, by bus and then two helicopters was arranged, in order to board a plane for Cairo. German sharpshooters were standing by with orders to simultaneously kill all the terrorists without harming the hostages.

The rescue plan failed and a bloody firefight between the Germans and Palestinians followed, ending at 3:00AM when the Palestinians set off a grenade in one helicopter, killing all aboard, and terrorists in the second helicopter shot to death the remaining, blindfolded Israeli hostages. Three of the Palestinian Arabs terrorists were captured alive and held in Germany.

On October 29, a Lufthansa jet was hijacked by Palestinian terrorists who demanded that the Munich killers be released. The Germans capitulated and the imprisoned terrorists were freed.
Who were the Munich terrorists?

The Munich operation was ordered by Yasser Arafat and carried out by Fatah, Arafat’s faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The Fatah terrorists called themselves Black September in order to safeguard Fatah’s international image and the PLO’s political interests. Although Salah Khalaf (aka Abu Iyad) officially headed the organization, Black September refrained from publishing official statements, and its leaders kept their identity hidden. Abu Iyad’s book, Stateless, explains that Black September was closely tied to Fatah…

The mastermind of the massacre, Abu Daoud, admitted his role in his autobiography, Memoirs of a Palestinian Terrorist, published in 1999. Although this was said to be the first public acknowledgment that the PLO was behind Munich, Daoud himself essentially admitted this when under interrogation by Jordanian police in 1972.

Man U suicide bomb plot

Terror target … Old Trafford, and inset, ticket for match

Published: 20 Apr 2004

By PHILIP CARDY
and ANDY RUSSELL

A SUICIDE bomb plot to kill thousands of soccer fans at Saturday’s Manchester United-Liverpool match was dramatically foiled yesterday.

Armed cops seized ten terror suspects in dawn raids.

Intelligence chiefs believe al-Qaeda fanatics planned to blow themselves up amid 67,000 unsuspecting supporters. A source said: “The target was Old Trafford.”

The Islamic fanatics planned to sit all around the ground to cause maximum carnage.

They had already bought the tickets for various positions in the stadium, cops revealed last night.

But armed cops foiled the horrific plot – which could have killed thousands watching Manchester United’s home game against Liverpool on Saturday – in a series of dawn raids yesterday.

Ten people were arrested after a massive surveillance operation involving British anti-terror units and American authorities.

A police source said: “The plot involved several individual bombers in separate parts of the stadium.

“If successful, any such attack would have caused absolute carnage. Thousands of people could have been killed.”

The planned attack would have had an instant global impact as the game is being televised worldwide.

More than 400 police swooped yesterday after a “major terrorist figure” under surveillance moved to Manchester. Police and intelligence organisations believe he came to direct the massacre, which would have been the first al-Qaeda-style outrage in Britain.

Nine men and one woman were arrested — all Iraqi Kurds or from North Africa.

Special Branch and the security services had been monitoring their movements and eavesdropping on mobile phone calls for months.

The operation also involved the US National Security Agency and GCHQ, the Government’s intelligence listening post.

Seven of the suspects were held in Manchester and one each in South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands.

It is believed all have links to extremist Islamic organisations. They were being quizzed at separate police stations around North West England last night.

But it was unclear whether any explosives or weapons had been recovered.

Bombers planning the Old Trafford massacre would have run the risk of being searched going into the ground before the 3pm kick-off.

Manchester United said away fans and those sitting in the higher tiers were frisked.

The identities and details of the suspects remained top secret last night — even to many of those involved in the operation.

One of the raids was at a flat above Dolphins takeaway in Upper Brook Street, near Manchester University. The area has a large ethnic community with many properties converted into bedsits.

Irfaan Arif, who lives in a nearby flat, said: “I was woken at 4am, looked out of the window and saw a lot of armed police. There was loads of banging and shouting.”

The three-storey Dolphins building was cordoned off along with next-door properties housing AK Computers and Funky Fones.

Forensic experts in protective clothing moved in after the initial search teams.

A police spokesman confirmed: “A number of search warrants were executed under the Terrorism Act 2000. Ten people have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism.

“We appreciate the public interest in this but are unable to provide more specific details at this stage.”

Greater Manchester’s Assistant Chief Constable Dave Whatton said: “It was an anti-terrorism operation that has been going on for some time and it will continue in the future.

“This is the first action that the public have become aware of as it is overt. It is set against the background of an increased threat level across the country.

“The addresses raided will continue to be searched for some time. It is a complex inquiry.”

And he appealed: “Because of the national heightened threat levels we would still ask people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.”

Sheikh Mohammed bal Qadri, deputy director of a mosque in Upper Brook Street, said he did not believe any of his members were among those being held.

He added: “Since September 11 we have been very vigilant, as mosques should be.

“If I see a person who is new, I ask him why he is here and what he is doing and ask these kind of questions.

“We are against these evil acts. In the religion of Islam we have tolerance.” The raids follow revelations last week that police in Manchester had raised their terror alert level.

More than 50 officers were moved from regular duties to work on a task force committed to combating terrorism.

Police have also conducted detailed surveys of land around Manchester Airport to identify sites which could be used to launch missiles attacks on aircraft.

Manchester Central MP Tony Lloyd said yesterday: “Clearly this is one of the most difficult levels of policing. But when police get the information to act successfully the whole of the British public will applaud their actions.”

2004 BLOOMFIELD STADIUM ATTACK PLOT

Underwear bomber planned to attack soccer stadium
By MARGOT DUDKEVITCH

The would be suicide bomber caught at the Erez crossing on August 31 wearing an explosive belt sewn into his underpants planned to blow up at the Bloomfield Stadium in Jaffa during a football match three days later.

In an interview on Channel 10, Mohammed al Razak said he had been approached by Hamas terrorists in Gaza who asked him to carry out the attack and had received two payments of $200 but said he was not a member of the Hamas.

Razak – who lived for over thirty years in Jaffa and worked in Bat Yam, a Jaffa bakery and the central bus station in Tel Aviv – said that he was glad he had been caught, as he doubted he could have detonated the bomb when the time came.

He refused to divulge the reason why he agreed to go ahead with the plan but cited family reasons.

He said that he had walked two or three meters past the checkpoint at Erez when a female soldier called out to him to stop.

Undergoing an inspection he told the soldiers he was wearing explosives when they questioned the bulky pants.

2009 MCG STADIUM ATTACK PLOT

MUSLIM CLERIC PLOTS TO BLOW UP THE MCG STADIUM (MELBOURN, AUSTRALIA, 2005)

The 2008 AFL Grand Final, played between Geelong and Hawthorn attracted a crowd of 100,012

Terror cell, Abdul Nacer Benbrika sentences due

February 03, 2009

THE leader of a home-grown terror cell that wanted to blow up the MCG has been jailed along with his followers.

Homegrown terror cell leader Abdul Nacer Benbrika has been jailed for a minimum of 12 years under Commonwealth legislation, with a maximum of 15 years, and Aimen has received seven-and-a-half years.

The five other men found guilty on terrorist charges last year received a range of minimum sentences.

The criminality of the terrorist cell would have been greater had a witness been more believable, a judge said before the sentences were handed down.

Justice Bernard Bongiorno told a packed Victorian Supreme Court that the seven men considered violent jihad an integral part of their religious obligations, often referring to themselves as mujahidin and talked about destroying buildings and killing infidels.

The group’s aim was to pressure the Australian government to withdraw troops from Iraq, he said.

Their trial heard the men had planned terrorist acts in Melbourne, including blowing up the MCG on grand final day and the Crown Casino.

Justice Bongiorno said evidence of a plot to blow up the MCG would not be taken into account because the man who gave it could not be believed.

He said Izzydeen Atik – who pleaded guilty to his terrorism-related charges – was a liar and a fraudster of significant accomplishment.

“It is unlikely the jury accepted him as a witness of truth and indeed the court will not,” Justice Bongiorno said.

“Had Atik’s evidence on the proposed targets been accepted, their criminality would have been significantly greater.

“It is not to say that their criminality is to be regarded as trivial.”

“The group may have indeed only have been an embryonic terrorist organisation … but the organisation fostered and encouraged its members to engage in violent jihad and to perform a terrorist act.”

He said terrorist acts in modern times were carried out by unskilled fanatics like Benbrika.
Justice Bongiorno said Benbrika, a father of seven, had not renounced his beliefs.

“All the evidence points to the conclusion that he maintains his position with respect to violent jihad,” he said.

Justice Bongiorno said there was a need to protect society from criminals such as Benbrika.
The court heard Benbrika, a former aircraft engineer, migrated to Australia from Algeria in 1989.

Also jailed were Benbrika’s followers: Aimen, 24, seven-and-a-half years; Fadl Sayadi, 28, six years; Ezzit Raad, 26, five-years-and-nine-months; Ahmed, 24, seven-and-a-half-years; Abdulla Merhi, 23, four-and-a-half years, and Amer Haddara, 29, four-and-a-half. (All sentences listed are the non-parole periods.)

He said terrorism was defined in legislation as the use of violence or the threat of violence to advance a political or ideological cause.

Justice Bongiorno said Benbrika was an admirer of Osama bin Laden, and possessed CDs showing unspeakable acts of cruelty against innocent victims by Muslim extremists.

He said Benbrika called non-Muslims the “Kuffar”, a derogatory term.

Justice Bongiorno said an undercover operative, known as SIO39, went with Benbrika to a bush location, where a test explosion was carried out.

The fact that Benbrika showed nonchalance over the explosion and failed to take up an offer from SIO39 to procure explosives could have been a result of his knowledge he was probably under surveillance by authorities.

“Benbrika was cautious with SIO 39, this was in complete contrast to his dealings with members of his own group,” Justice Bongiorno said.

The judge said in secretly recorded conversations Benbrika told another member of the group he wanted “to do something big”.

According to Atik, who the judge said was a liar and social security cheat, targets were to include the Grand Final and possibly the Melbourne Grand Prix and the NAB cup. Justice Bongiorno said he was satisfied that much of the information provided by Atik about targets was false and self-serving and would not be used against members of the group.

The seven were members of a terrorist organisation which was encouraging and taking some steps to carry out an act but they had not obtained or chosen targets.

It did however, Justice Bongiorno said, gather Jihadi material and use material such as videos of beheadings to desensitise its members to the use of violence.

“Had knowledge of these targets been proved their criminality would be consequencially greater,” the judge said.

But the absence of a target did not mean they should not face punishment.

Justice Bongiorno said the home-grown group saw themselves as brothers, bound together in the cause of violent jihad, and called themselves the Mujahidin.

“They saw violent jihad as an integral part of their religious commitment,” Justice Bongiorno said.

In his Supreme Court sentence the judge said the group’s spiritual leader, Abdul Nacer Benbrika, was a former Algerian aircraft engineer who came to Australia in 1989 because he felt there were problems in following his hardline religious views in his own country.

Benbrika saw Australia as a land at war, and the judge said he was seen in the Muslim community as a learned man, but also as holding harsh religious views.

Benbrika was often in conflict with other Muslim organisations in Melbourne and was excluded from the Preston mosque.

The other members of the group came into contact with Benbrika, Justice Bongiorno said, through religious classes that were relatively benign.

The judge said the men were involved in a terrorist organisation between July 2004 and November 2008 when they were arrested in simultaneous raids across Melbourne.

The judge said the Criminal Code Act had covered a number of terrorism related offences.

The law was designed to deter terrorism and the use of violence to further political or religious aims and said other courts had found crimes of terrorism deserved punishment.

Benbrika, a father of seven, may have been less than expert as a terrorist but that did not matter, the judge said.

He had enormous influence over his young followers and sought to instill a hatred of non Muslims, and Muslims who did not believe in his extremist views.

The judge said Benbrika’s lawyer argued that his client showed little ability to direct anything and was not a leader in any real sense.

But the judge said the group may have been embryonic and Benbrika’s leadership less than it would have been a trained solider or trained terrorist but that mattered little.

It was the existence of the group and its aims and Benbrika’s encouragement for its members to take part in terrorist acts that formed the offences of which he had been convicted.

Justice Bongiorno said ineptitude did not excuse Benbrika’s actions and overseas experience of terrorism showed that terrorists were often not highly skilled or able to carry out highly effective operations.

Rather, said the judge often the principal attribute of terrorists was being a fanatic.

Justice Bongiorno said a psychiatrist had said in a report to the court that Benbrika was a fanatic who was still a believer in violent jihad and had said his group should adhere to their views, even in jail.

The most serious charge against Benbrika was directing a terrorist organisation, the judge said.

But it would be hard to direct an organisation without being a member of it and the sentences on these two charges should be concurrent. The court must impose a sentence that is just, Justice Bongiorno said, but took into account the need to deter others from engaging in similar conduct. .

The trial commenced in early February and the verdicts were handed down in September.

The judge said being a member of terrorist organisation carried the maximum penalty of 10 years and most of the other charges carried a maximum of 25 years.

“All of the evidence points to the conclusion that he (Benbrika) maintains his position with respect to violent jihad,” the judge said.

Aimen was described as a devout Muslim and his criminality as being part of a terrorist organisation was the same as Benbrika’s or slightly less.

According to the Crown, the judge said, Benbrika saw Aimen as his “heir apparent’ and if the Sheik went to jail Benbrika said he should “keep things going”

Aimen undoubtedly took a leadership role and was instrumental in raising money for the group from rebirthing stolen cars.

But the judge said he could not find beyond reasonable doubt that the proceeds from the stolen car racket would have been used to buy weapons.

However the money in the group’s “sandooq” was to be used to further its terrorist aims.

“There is no evidence before the court he has abandoned violent jihad,” the judge said.

According to reports before the court he was still a committed terrorist and this had to be taken into account when considering protection of the public and the prospects of rehabilitation.

Sayadi, according to his counsel, played a lesser role than others, but Justice Bongiorno said the evidence showed he played a number of roles in the group.

The judge said Sayadi provided materials to the group including materials praising the terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in new York. He also acted in a security role.

A consultant forensic psychologist said Sayadi did not accept he had been a member of a terrorist organisation and was suffering from depression.

He continued to protest his innocence but there was no evidence he had changed his jihadi views.
Abdullah Merhi, was one of 10 children of Lebanese immigrants and was a father of one. He played fotball for the Fitzroy Lions.

His wife gave a testimonial to the court which spoke of his qualities as a husband and a father, the judge said.

In letters to prison authorites Merhi said he was opposed to violence and opposed to the killing of innocent people, but the judge said they were self-serving and little weight could be given to them.

They did not show his state of mind at the time he committed the offences, and it was an element of the crime that the member of a terrorist organisation knows its aims.

Justice Bongiorno rejected a defence contention Merhi had rejected extremist views and moved away from Benbrika’s adherence to violent jihad.

Their marathon six-month trial heard that potential targets included the 2005 AFL Grand Final at the MCG, railways stations and other public places where they knew large numbers of innocent people would gather.

Four other men who faced trial were acquitted and one faces a retrial.

In a secretly recorded conversation between the group’s spiritual leader Benbrika and one of his followers, Abdullah Merhi, Benbrika said they were not talking about “one or two or three” deaths.

Merhi asked Benbrika “like Spain?”

Prosecutor Richard Maidment SC told the jury this was a reference to the terrorist attacks on Spanish trains in 2004 where 191 people were killed and 2000 were injured.

In another conversation Merhi asked Benbrika if killing their innocent victims would be pleasing to Allah.

“You are pleasing the Almighty,” Benbrika replied.

Benbrika gave them permission to kill women, children and the elderly in pursuit of violent jihad.

In the tape played to the court Merhi said:”If John Howard kills innocents… Muslim families… do we have to kill him?”.

Mr Benbrika says that he can only tell him what Allah says.

The sentences handed down were:

Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 48, of Dallas:

Guilty of intentionally being a member of a terrorist organisation, knowing that it was a terrorist organisation

Guilty of intentionally directing the activities of a terrorist organisation, knowing that it was a terrorist organization.

Guilty of possessing a CD connected with the preparation of a terrorist act.

BETRAYED BY THEIR OWN March 2003: Australia commits troops to fight beside the US and Britain in the ground invasion of Iraq. Militant Muslim cleric Abdul Nacer Benbrika believes this makes Australia a land of war and a fair target for a home-grown terrorist attack. July 2004: After a tip-off from within the Melbourne Muslim community, ASIO and Victorian and federal police establish Operation Pendennis to investigate Benbrika and his followers. Extensive electronic and physical surveillance of Benbrika and followers eventually collects 16,400 hours of recordings from bugs and 98,000 telephone intercepts. July 2005: Police raid a number of homes of some group members who had been stealing cars to fund their terrorist plans. Their trial is later told the raids disrupted plans to mount an attack on the AFL Grand Final at the MCG two months later.

As though the Olympics weren’t already in enough trouble, now a militant Islamic group has declared jihad against the games.

A MILITANT Islamic group has threatened to attack the Beijing Olympics with suicide bombers and biological weapons and has claimed responsibility for a string of fatal bombings and explosions in China over recent weeks.

In a video released by IntelCenter, a terrorism monitoring group, a bearded man identified as Commander Seyfullah is seen reading a declaration of jihad against the Olympics and warns athletes and spectators, especially Muslims, to stay away.

Muslim group releases anti-Olympic video

Updated Fri Aug 8, 2008 5:02am AEST

A Muslim separatist group in China has made a new video threat against the Beijing Olympics, warning Muslims to keep their children away from the Games.

The US-based IntelCentre, which monitors extremist groups, says the six-minute video shows flames consuming a Beijing Olympics logo and an explosion over a venue for the competition.

It also features a masked, turbanned speaker carrying what appears to be an assault rifle.

IntelCentre says the video’s been attributed to the Turkistan Islamic Party, an ethnic Uighur and Muslim organisation seeking an independent homeland in Xinjiang province.

The group has claimed responsibility for a deadly bus bombing in Shanghai three months ago, and has warned of more attacks during the Olympics.

Two East Jerusalem residents arrested over Hamas plot to fire rockets into Israeli soccer game

Mussa Hamada and Basem Omri, both Israeli citizens, were arrested for allegedly collecting weapons and scouting for launching spots around Jerusalem’s Teddy stadium.

By Anshel Pfeffer

The Shin Bet security service has arrested two Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem suspected of plotting to fire rockets at a major sports stadium in the capital on behalf of Hamas, a gag order lifted Sunday revealed.

Mussa Hamada and Basem Omri, both Israeli citizens, were allegedly planning to carry out the attack on Teddy Stadium during a Premier League soccer game, but the plot never came into fruition.

Both suspects have allegedly been affiliated with terrorist activities organized by Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood for a number of years. Their involvement in planning terror attacks began after Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip two years ago, according to the Shin Bet.

The two had apparently been scoping out the hills around Teddy Stadium to find a spot from which to launch the rocket and had been gathering information about security in the area, said the Shin Bet.

The Shin Bet said that the suspects had already collected a number of pistols and were working up to a cache of additional weapons and explosive materials to create the rocket device.

The security service arrested at least three Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem also suspected of taking part in the sale and purchase of these weapons.

Hamada apparently met with other Islamist activists a number of times over the last few years in Saudi Arabia, the investigation revealed, where he acquired money and the pistols for his terror activities.

The Jerusalem District Court indicted both Hamada and Omri on charges including membership in a terrorist network, illegal possession of weapons and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Arabs held for ‘plotting Jerusalem stadium attack’
(AFP) – [Jan. 2, 2011]

JERUSALEM — Israeli police and agents of the Shin Bet security service have arrested five Arab men suspected of involvement in a plot to fire a rocket into a Jerusalem football stadium, the agency said on Sunday.

A Shin Bet statement said that two of the men, Mussa Hamada and Bassem Omari, had for several years been active in the militant Islamic movement Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood in Jerusalem.

It said they received support from the Muslim Brotherhood in Saudi Arabia.

The two were formally charged on Sunday with “membership in and support for a terrorist organisation, firearms offences and conspiracy to commit a crime,” the statement said.

Three other men have already been charged with trafficking in weapons, it added.

The Shin Bet said Omari, a resident of the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Safafa, is an Israeli citizen.

Hamada and the three accomplices were described as residents of east Jerusalem, a term used to describe Palestinians authorised to live in Jerusalem but who do not have Israeli citizenship.

The statement released Sunday was the first news of the arrests, which the agency said were made in November.

It said the suspects began plotting an attack after Israel’s December 2008-January 2009 “Operation Cast Lead” offensive in Gaza, and had planned to target the 21,000-capacity Teddy Stadium during a football match.

“From their Shin Bet interrogation it transpires that after Operation Cast Lead the two began to plan a terror operation in Jerusalem, as part of which they examined the possibility of firing a missile at Teddy Stadium while a game was in progress,” the statement said.

“The two went to a ridge overlooking the stadium in order to select the best place for an attack and carried out reconnaissance of the area, although the planning was not translated into action,” it added.

The statement said the men had bought several pistols and were trying to acquire a rifle and explosives.

It said that during the past two years Hamada made several visits to Saudi Arabia, where he met a local member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

“During one of the meetings, the Saudi representative gave Mussa Hamada money for the purchase of weapons and asked in return that he gather information on Jerusalem,” the statement said.

More than 270,000 Arabs live in east Jerusalem…

Very few of them hold Israeli citizenship although Palestinian residents of the city enjoy special status which allows them free movement throughout Israel, unlike their brethren in the West Bank.

5 charged in plot to bomb Israeli stadiumBy the CNN Wire Staff

Jerusalem (CNN) — Five members of Hamas were charged Sunday with planning to fire a rocket into a Jerusalem stadium during a soccer game, Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said.

The five were arrested in November, Rosenfeld said.

According to a statement from Israel’s security service, the Shin Bet, the two main suspects were identified as Mussa Hamada of East Jerusalem, and Bassem Omri, an Israeli citizen living in Beit Tzafafa.

Both are members of Hamas and the “Muslim Brothers” movement in Jerusalem, the Shin Bet said.

The pair are suspected of planning terrorist attacks following Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in 2008, the statement said.

One of the possibilities they considered was possibly firing a missile into the soccer stadium in Jerusalem during a game.

Three other Palestinians were charged with selling them pistols, Shin Bet said.

Staffers charged with helping 2 e. J’lem men obtain guns in connection to plot to fire missile into Teddy Stadium.
Two employees of the British Consulate General in Jerusalem have been charged with weapons trafficking in connection to an alleged Hamas plot to fire a missile into the capital’s main soccer stadium, Reuters reported.

A British Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman confirmed the arrested and said that Britain was seeking confirmation of the charges immediately.

“We have been told by the Israeli authorities that the investigation into our two employees is unrelated to the work they do at the consulate,” the spokesman told Reuters.

The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) said that the consulate employees aided the the plotters of the attack in obtaining guns. The plotters are two east Jerusalem Arabs, Musa Hamada from the Sur Baher neighborhood and his friend Bassem Omeri, an Israeli citizen from Beit Safafa.

According to details of the investigation released for publication on Sunday, the two men collected intelligence on Teddy Stadium, the home of Betar Jerusalem, with the goal of firing a missile into it during a game.

The pair allegedly began plotting the attack following the IDF’s Cast Lead offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip two years ago. They visited a number of hilltops near the 21,600-capacity stadium in the capital’s south to study possible launch sites for the attack, likely to be carried out with an anti-tank missile.

The attack did not materialize, however, after the two concluded that it was too complicated.

Hamada and Omeri, the Shin Bet said, also bought a number of handguns and tried to procure rifles and bombs.

Other Arab residents of Jerusalem were involved in purchasing the weapons, and they have also been arrested.

ISLAMISTS MURDER FOOTBALL FANS FOR WATCHING WORLD CUP (Somalia, 2010)

Militants kill two for watching Eagles/Argentina’s match
From KUNLE SOLAJA and GBOLAHAN DADA, South Africa
Monday, June 14, 2010

Islamist militants belonging to the Hezbal Islam rebel group have killed two football fans and arrested 10 others after attacking a house where World Cup fans were watching a hotly-contested game between Argentina and Nigeria in the Huruwaa neighborhood north east of the capital Mogadishu late on Saturday.

Residents say that heavily armed militants stormed a house where World Cup fans were secretly watching the football competition which was prohibited in Islamist controlled regions in Somalia.

“Two young men who tried to jump over the wall were shot and killed while 10 others including my husband and my teenage son were taken into Islamist custody in the village,” Halima Ahmed, a mother of five children said in a telephone conversation on Sunday morning.

Islamist militia leader Sheik Mohamed Abu Abdalla said that those in custody have broken and Islamic rule and will be dealt with in accordance with Islamic law. Prior to the World Cup opening, the Islamists in Somalia warned people against watching the World Cup, saying that it was not compatible with Islamic law and that those who were caught watching it would be brought before the Islamic court.

“Football descended from the old Christian cultures and our Islamic administration will never allow watching what they call the FIFA World Cup. We are sending our last warning to the people,” Sheik Abu Yahya Al Iraqi said, addressing crowds in the Suqa Holaha village north of Mogadishu, hours before World Cup kick off Friday.
President of the Somali Football Federation, Said Mahmoud Nur, who was reached for comment while in South Africa, said that he couldn’t talk about the matter because of security reasons.

Meanwhile, residents in the southern Jubba regions have sent a complaint letter to the Al Shabab administration in the regions demanding permission to watch the world’s largest sporting event. Reports say that representatives from the community including elders went to the Al Shabab administrative office in the southern key port town of Kismayo Saturday demanding an acceptance of watching the World Cup, but were denied and told that they would be arrested if they came back with a similar demand.

OLYMPICS 2000 BOMB

Saturday, 26 August, 2000, 05:37 GMT 06:37 UK Olympic ‘bomb plot’ foiled

Police accidentally uncovered the threat to the Olympics

New Zealand police have uncovered a possible plot to blow up a nuclear reactor in Sydney during next month’s Olympic Games.

The reactor is in Sydney’s suburbs

Australian police have been informed and the two forces are working together on the case involving a group of Afghan refugees who had suspicious material in their possession. The group was reportedly linked with Afghanistan-based terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Detective superintendent Bill Bishop, New Zealand’s National Crime manager, said: “That material included a map of Sydney highlighting a nuclear reactor and highlighting entrance and exit routes.”

In Sydney, a New South Wales police spokesman said they had been briefed by New Zealand on the potential threat to the Lucas Heights nuclear research reactor in the city’s outer suburbs.

Sydney has a population of about 4.5 million which could swell by another million people during the games… The bomb plot was reportedly linked to Osama bid Laden … http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/896660.stm

CYANIDE

CYANIDE THREAT: Tapes reveal poison plan

Back to the Perpetrator’s Page

John Follain and Nicholas Rufford

10-14-2001

SECRETLY recorded tapes have revealed plans by followers of Osama Bin Laden for a chemical weapon attack in Europe using a poisonous invisible gas that security sources say was cyanide.

A gang of terrorists active in Britain, Germany and Italy plotted to use tins of tomatoes to transport “a liquid that suffocates people”. The plan was foiled after a Libyan at the centre of the plot was arrested in Munich on Wednesday.

The evidence is the first that Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda organisation was preparing to use weapons of mass destruction. The tapes were made by Italian anti-terrorist police, who bugged an apartment outside Milan that the gang thought was a safe house. The suspects discussed getting 10 litres of the poison, enough to kill thousands if released indoors.

One theory is that the group planned to spread the poison in an American government building in London or Rome. A witness who trained in one of Bin Laden’s camps said he was instructed how to put cyanide in a building’s ventilation system.

The tins of tomatoes could have been used to transport cyanide crystals before they were dissolved into a liquid, which could then be dispersed through the ventilation ducts. If large quantities were available, the vapour produced could kill many occupants of a building within 10 minutes.

The transcripts are part of evidence compiled by Stefano Dambruoso, an Italian prosecutor, against five suspected members of the Salafist Group for Faith and Combat, a militant offshoot of the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), backed by Bin Laden. The five are in custody in Milan. At least two had links to Britain.

Last Friday the US Treasury named the Islamic Cultural Institute in Milan, to which cell members were linked, as “the most important base of Al-Qaeda in Europe”. It said the institute was used by Bin Laden’s organisation “as a station from which weapons, men and money travel the whole world”.

The clandestine recordings were made in March and April, when gang members were becoming impatient to receive instructions from Bin Laden and to be told the target. They also reveal claims that female followers of Bin Laden were being trained as potential suicide attackers.

The most chilling conversations took place between Ben Heni Mohamed Lased, a 32-year-old Libyan arrested in Munich last week, and Essid Sami Ben Khemais, 31, a Tunisian, believed to be the leader of the Italian cell, who was arrested in Milan in April. Khemais is believed to have met Mohammed Atta, one of the 19 hijackers behind the American attacks.

Khemais and Lased spent a week in an apartment near Milan to plan terrorist atrocities, unaware it was bugged. Lased is heard trying to teach Khemais to conceal a bomb in a personal cassette player, to which Khemais responds by asking about chemical weapons: “I’d like to learn how to use the medicine, I’d like to see what effect it has when someone breathes it in. The Libyan has the formula; he’s a chemistry professor.”

Another activist said: “What’s going on – you are putting down your guns and taking up industrial products?” Lased replied: “There’s a liquid which is extremely efficient because it suffocates people. Do you want to try it?” The other man said: “Yes, why not. A few barrels.”

In another conversation, Khemais urges Lased to get in touch with “the sheikh”, believed to be Bin Laden, about recruiting attackers.

“Talk to the sheikh. I need two people who I have already got in mind, the Libyan and the Kurd from London. What I need is not an army but two people who have got a brain, training and nothing to lose or to gain. They spread the gas and say goodbye. I only need a barrel of 10 litres and a few documents. God is with us.”

On the evening of March 9, Lased confided: “Believe me, the sheikh is planning something. He has an objective and he wants to realise it, just like he has achieved all his desires. It’s not a little thing.”

Predicting the success of Bin Laden’s terror campaign, Lased said: “God loves us because Europe is now in our hands. Now we are emigrant fighters, that’s the task we’ve got to carry out with honour. We have to be like snakes. We have to fight and then hide.”

Lased also explains how to reach Bin Laden’s training camps by obtaining a visa from Iran’s London embassy, ostensibly for visiting Mecca. “In Iran there is an organisation which helps mujaheddin brothers to cross the border. There’s total collaboration with the Iranians,” he said.

Khemais talked about trips to Afghanistan during which he saw Bin Laden’s weapons, including captured US cruise missiles launched against the camps in 1998 but which failed to explode.

“The Americans are probably convinced that bombing the sheikh’s training camps was a victory, but the truth is it was a defeat. Most of the weapons didn’t even explode and they have enriched the sheikh’s arsenal,” he claimed. http://www.papillonsartpalace.com/cyanide.htm

DIRTY BOMB (2001)

BIN LADEN’S NUCLEAR PLOT: Al-Qaeda’s men held secret meetings to build ‘dirty bomb’

Adam Nathan and David Leppard

EVIDENCE has emerged of a plan by Osama Bin Laden to manufacture a “dirty bomb” that could spray nuclear material over highly populated areas.

British intelligence services are investigating claims by a Bulgarian businessman that he was approached earlier this year by a middleman for Bin Laden seeking to obtain highly radioactive material.

The pair discussed setting up an environmental company as a front to buy nuclear waste that could be combined with conventional explosives to create a “dirty bomb”.

It is believed to be at least the fourth attempt by Bin Laden to obtain nuclear material. The Saudi terrorist has publicly vowed to gain weapons of mass destruction.

The latest approach was made in April after Ivan Ivanov, a Bulgarian businessman with long-standing ties to a Middle Eastern contracting firm, was invited to Pakistan.

On his arrival in Peshawar, Ivanov, a former Bulgarian intelligence officer, said it became clear his hosts were enthusiastic supporters of Bin Laden. They apparently saw his political links in eastern Europe as a “useful asset”.

Speaking in a cafe on the outskirts of Sofia last week, Ivanov recalled how the men took him to see Bin Laden, who was speaking at a religious festival on April 10 on the outskirts of Peshawar.

At the time Bin Laden was wanted for his alleged involvement in the bombing in 1998 of two American embassies in Africa, in which more than 200 people had been killed. Yet Ivanov claimed uniformed Pakistani soldiers armed with M-16 machine guns had provided security.

A day later, Ivanov said he was taken on a rough mountainous bus ride along Pakistan’s remote border with China. There he was led to a secret location, where he was introduced to Bin Laden as “our partner from Europe”.

When Ivanov discreetly checked his Magellan 310 global positioning system, it showed the meeting had actually taken place in China. Western intelligence sources described the meeting near the Pakistani border as “credible”.

Ivanov then travelled with his new business associates to a large villa in Rawalpindi. The next day he was approached by a Pakistani scientist who described himself as chemical engineer.

The scientist, who was highly educated and spoke almost fluent English, said he was interested in obtaining spent nuclear fuel rods from the Kozlodui nuclear electricity plant in Bulgaria.

“He wanted a legitimate way of buying nuclear waste from the power plant,” said Ivanov. “He was ready to give me money in advance to find local companies to help him to export this material.”

Ivanov was offered $200,000 (£137,000) to help set up an environmental firm to buy nuclear waste, and asked if he would run the company. He declined the offer and, on his return home, informed officials in Bulgaria of the meeting.

British authorities in Pakistan later discovered the 49-year-old scientist had been issued with two six-month visas to visit Britain in the last two years. They are now investigating his links with the Bin Laden network.

Although his trips to Britain remain a mystery, intelligence officials believe the scientist may have met sympathisers at British universities or tried to set up front companies similar to the one planned in Bulgaria.

Ivanov’s account of the Bin Laden plot has been backed by Velizar Shalamanov, the former Bulgarian deputy defence minister, who last week said Ivanov had worked for the government.

A British diplomatic source in Pakistan said: “This appears to be a sophisticated plot using a scientist and a credible front company, and that is a concern.”

Although British intelligence believes Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network may have some crude chemical weapons such as cyanide, there is no evidence to suggest he has obtained any nuclear material.

In September 1998 Mamdouh Mahmud Salim, alleged to be a high-level aide to Bin Laden, was arrested in Germany after trying to buy low- grade nuclear reactor fuel.

Jamal al-Fadl, a former Bin Laden aide, told the FBI he had witnessed Al-Qaeda members trying to buy enriched uranium in the mid-1990s, according to court documents. He also claimed to have been to Sudan, where an associate of an army officer tried to sell him uranium for £1m.

Bin Laden has never made any secret of his interest in acquiring nuclear weapons. In an interview in January 1999, he said: “It would be a sin for Muslims not to try to possess the weapons that would prevent the infidels from inflicting harm on Muslims.”

TOXIC PLANS (2003)

Exclusive: Toxic Shock: The Very Real Threat of Bio-Chemical Terror (Part 2) Adrian Morgan

Author: Adrian Morgan

Date Published: 2007-03-20

…On January 3, 2003, when police went to arrest Bourgass from his apartment above a chemist’s shop at 352 High Road, Wood Green, north London, castor oil beans, processing equipment (a grinder, mortar and pestle, a bottle of acetone, funnel, thermometers and scales) and photocopied recipes for ricin production were found.

Bourgass had fled to an apartment in Crumpsall Lane, Manchester. When on January 14 police tried to enter this apartment, Bourgass stabbed Detective Constable Stephen Oake eight times as he tried to escape. The detective died from his wounds. Bourgass was convicted in June 2004 and given a life sentence for DC Oake’s murder. In April 2005, Bourgass was found guilty of “conspiracy to commit a public nuisance by using poisons and explosives” and he was sentenced to 17 years’ jail.

Bourgass had frequently slept at Abu Hamza’s mosque in Finsbury Park, north London, where he photocopied his chemical recipes. He had used the mosque as his mailing address. Following Bourgass’ arrest, the mosque was raided on January 20, 2003. Hidden behind ceiling panels were found false passports, CS gas canisters and, ominously, chemical warfare protection suits and a gas mask.

Bourgass had intended to use the ricin which he was developing to attack the busy Heathrow Express rail link, placing ricin on hand rails and in lavatories on the trains. During his 2005 trial, chemical experts confirmed that his production methods – using a solvent to break down fats and oils in the castor oil beans, filtering the substance and evaporating to form a powder – would have been effective. An expert from Porton Down chemical research center recreated the method and tested it on mice. http://www.fsmarchives.org/article.php?id=817543

CNS Reports Ricin Found in London: An al-Qa`ida Connection? http://cns.miis.edu/reports/ricin.htm

From The Times March 21, 2003

Ricin traces found in Paris station

From Adam Sage in Paris Recommend? FEARS grew that terrorists could be planning a poison attack in Europe after the French Interior Ministry said last night that traces of ricin had been found at a mainline railway station in Paris. Officials said that police had found the poison in flasks discovered in a locker by staff at the Gare de Lyon in eastern Paris.

On Monday the police had found two flasks containing a white powder, which tests revealed to be a “highly toxic” mixture containing ricin. They also discovered two other flasks and a bottle containing unidentified liquids.

The discovery will increase fears that a pan-European Islamic network is preparing chemical attacks. It comes two months after police found traces of the chemical in a flat in North London.

There is particular concern that Islamic extremists could try to strike during the first days of the attack on Iraq.

Although France has opposed the war, the authorities in Paris are worried that it could nevertheless be chosen as a target by Islamic groups.

The French Government reinforced its anti-terrorist measures yesterday, drafting in at least 400 additional soldiers to protect main cities.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the Interior Minister, put in place a police unit to co-ordinate the fight against terrorism. He also ordered that all high-speed trains be checked for suspicious packages.

France is known to be a home for Islamic militants who established terrorist networks in and around its cities in the 1990s. Although effective police action has prevented Islamic terrorist attacks there in recent years, French-based groups are thought to be providing support to those abroad, including in Britain.

Two days ago, for instance, French police arrested two suspected terrorists in connection with an inquiry into a so-called Chechen network. The arrests came after police raids in two Parisian suburbs, La Courneuve and Romainville, in December when nine suspects were detained.

At the time, the Interior Ministry said there was evidence to suggest that the group from La Courneuve and Romainville was planning a poison gas attack, as well as a conventional attack on Russian interests in Paris.

Although the police gave few details last night of the discovery at the station in Paris, there will be concern that it could have been planned for use in Britain.

In January, seven suspects, mostly of Algerian origin, were arrested in a flat in Wood Green, North London, where police discovered ricin traces in what appeared to be a chemical laboratory. After the raid, Tony Blair said it was inevitable that terrorists would try to attack Britain at some point.

In Manchester, a police officer was killed during a second operation in connection with the ricin inquiry.

French police will also be studying the possibility that terrorists could be planning attacks on targets in France.

Jean-Pierre Raffarin, the French Prime Minister, said yesterday: “The terrorist threat is present. France is targeted like all Western countries. Our country must be governed with calm and determination.”

Ricin is one of the deadliest naturally occurring poisons (Mark Henderson writes). It is four times more toxic than cobra venom and, when injected, can kill with a dose as small as one microgram per kilogram of bodyweight. Bioterrorism experts believe, however, that it is most likely to be used to poison food or water supplies. The toxin is among the most readily available to terrorists. It comes from the seeds of the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis, which is grown all over the world to make castor oil. About a million tonnes of castor oil is produced every year, and the mash left behind as waste can contain as much as 5 per cent ricin by weight. Although the toxic waste is normally rendered harmless by immersion in boiling water, the poison can be extracted using a simple chemical process.

As well as being easy to make in large amounts, ricin is highly stable, making it easy to store and transport. It works as a cytotoxin, or cell poison, with a single molecule capable of killing a cell.

Within three hours the victim will experience abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, followed by severe dehydration, reduced blood pressure and collapse of the liver, kidneys and lungs.

Death usually occurs within three to five days. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1121649.ece

Ricin Found in Paris; Anti-U.S. Plot? Ricin, Cyanide Found in Paris; U.S. Facilities May Have Been Targets

By Brian Ross March 20, 2003 Vials of the deadly poisons ricin and cyanide were found in a Paris train station locker, French authorities said today. Officials told ABCNEWS they believe the material was apparently to be used in attacks on U.S. targets in Europe.

Two vials of the toxin ricin were found in a self-check storage locker at the Gare de Lyon railway station on Monday. The locker also contained two bottles of a black powder, believed to be iron perchloride, used for explosives, and a small bottle of cyanide, French intelligence sources said.

Officials believe terrorists intended to attack U.S. targets in France or Italy, sources told ABCNEWS. The discovery may have disrupted a major attack, they said.

A ‘Match’ to Poisons Linked to Al Qaeda

Chemical analysis showed the ricin found in Paris “matched” traces of ricin that British anti-terrorist police found during a raid on a London apartment in January, sources said.

One of the seven suspects arrested during the London raid was found to have attended an al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan.

The London ricin was linked to a Kurdish extremist group in northern Iraq called Ansar al-Islam, known to have ties to al Qaeda.

French authorities had been watching the locker where the ricin was found, as part of a long-term anti-terror investigation, sources told ABCNEWS. They had hoped to arrest an agent when he or she came to retrieve the toxins. When no one arrived, they finally opened the locker.

Ricin is extremely dangerous, but not considered an effective tool for mass killing. It is classified as a Class B bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The poison, which is made from castor beans, is deadlier than cyanide and is most deadly when injected directly into a victim.

If inhaled, it can cause acute lung injury and progressive respiratory failure; if ingested, it can lead rapidly to gastrointestinal hemorrhage, severe dehydration and death within three days.

The other materials found in the Paris locker may indicate a plan to spread the poisons into the air by setting off an explosive charge. http://tvnz.co.nz/content/176960

DIRTY BOMB TO KILL THOUSANDS – US / UK

Terrorist jailed for life for conspiracy to murder in the UK and US

A British man who planned to blow up UK and American targets killing hundreds, if not thousands of people, was jailed for life today with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 40 years.

Dhiren Barot proposed a series of co-ordinated attacks in the UK, including detonating a dirty bomb, launching an attack on a train and packing three limousines with gas cylinders and explosives before setting them off in underground car parks.

The 34-year-old, a close associate or member of Al Qaeda, was arrested by the Met’s Anti-Terrorist Branch in what became at the time, the largest counter terrorist investigation ever launched in the UK. The investigation also involved officers from Special Branch.

Barot also made plans to cause lethal explosions at American financial institutions, including the New York Stock Exchange and Washington’s World Bank.

His aim was to kill as many innocent civilians as possible.

Mr Justice Butterfield told Barot: “You are a determined and dedicated terrorist. You are a highly intelligent and extremely dangerous man. You trained for years in Pakistan in order to wreak death and destruction on the western world.”

Barot had previously admitted conspiracy to murder at a hearing at Woolwich Crown Court in October.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of the Met Counter Terrorism Command, said:

“By his own admission Barot wanted to commit mass murder on both sides of the Atlantic. He was the leader of the plot. If he had succeeded, hundreds if not thousands could have died.

“His plans to set off a dirty bomb in this country could have caused widespread fear, panic and disruption.

“Barot was a determined and experienced terrorist. He went to terrorist training camps in 1995, long before 9/11, or the invasions of Afghanistan or Iraq. He is not someone who has recently been attracted to the terrorist cause.

“He is a full-time terrorist. His training showed through. He used anti-surveillance, coded messages and secret meetings, but he could not evade capture. He was stopped before he could attack the British and American people. As always, our concern for public safety was paramount.

“I cannot praise highly enough everyone who has been involved in this case for their tireless and skilful work in bringing Barot to justice. His arrest and conviction will be seen as a landmark in the fight against terrorism in the UK.

“For well over two years we have been unable to show the British public the reality of the threat they faced from this man. Now they can see for themselves the full horror of his plans.”

Barot carried out extensive research and planning for the attacks, including reconnaissance visits to America, via the internet and visiting public and specialist libraries.

He wrote detailed documents for attacks in both countries, which were found on computer hard drives following his arrest in August 2004. Handwritten notes referring to chemical mixtures were also recovered.

In a written plan titled the Gas Limos Project, which was recovered from a laptop during a counter terrorist operation in Gujurat, Barot wrote about the chaos and pandemonium a bomb exploding on a tube train travelling under the Thames could cause.

He wrote: . . . imagine the chaos that would be caused if a powerful explosion were to rip through here and actually rupture the river itself. This would cause pandemonium, what with the explosions, flooding, drowning, etc that would occur/result.

Other elements of the ‘Gas Limos Project’ were recovered in the UK following his arrest in August 2004. It had been completed in the aftermath of the Madrid bombings and proposed a series of co-ordinated attacks to be launched in this country.

Various methods of attack, including packing limousines with explosives and driving them into underground car parks, arson and aeroplanes flown into buildings, were considered in it.

The Gas Limos Project also made reference to David Copeland, who carried out three attacks in London in 1999; Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh and Ramzi Yusef, the 1993 World Trade Center bomber. This clearly demonstrates that Barot had studied and been influenced by the work of other terrorists.

Detailed plans including organisation structures and business histories of some of Barot’s American targets – Citigroup, Prudential, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the New York Stock Exhange – were among other documents found on computers.

The plans also included details of structural surveys, escape routes and security measures and how close emergency services such as fire departments and hospitals were to each building.

The intention, clearly set out in the documents, was to collapse the buildings causing massive loss of life. Plans and research was still being worked on as late as July 2004.

A reconnaissance video filmed in New York and focusing on security measures at Manhattan buildings was also recovered after Barot’s arrest.

The investigation, codenamed Operation Rhyme, set new standards for the scale and complexity of the evidence. Nearly 300 computers and around 1,800 items of discs, cds and removable storage were seized and examined, and 4,000 garages and lock ups visited.

The case also involved a wide range of investigative methods, including forensic linguistics to prove the authorship of documents; facial mapping; computer forensics and handwriting analysis. http://cms.met.police.uk/news/convictions/terrorism/terrorist_jailed_for_life_for_conspiracy_to_murder_in_the_uk_and_us

Muslim was planning dirty bomb attack in UK

By Duncan Gardham Published: 12:02AM BST 13 Oct 2006

Dhiren Barot pleaded guilty A British Muslim yesterday admitted plotting a series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks in this country including one involving a radioactive “dirty bomb”.

Dhiren Barot, from Kingsbury, north London, also pleaded guilty to planning attacks against the IMF, World Bank and financial institutions in New York, Washington and Newark.

…Edmund Lawson, QC, told Woolwich Crown Court, south London: “These plans to carry out explosions at those premises with no warning were basically designed to kill as many innocent people as possible.”

Barot described a car bomb plot called the “Gas Limos Project” as “the main cornerstone of a series of planned attacks” in Britain.

The court heard that Barot had asked for his plans to be outlined as part of his guilty plea.

“The principal planned attack involved packing three limousines with gas cylinders, explosives and the like and detonating them in underground car parks,” Mr Lawson said.

Barot was said to have three other projects, including one that he called the “Radiation (Dirty Bomb) Project”.

He had wanted the attacks to be launched in a “synchronised, concurrent and back-to-back” way with the main Gas Limos Project.

But the court heard he believed that the Radiation Project deserved to be an independent plot in its own right and would cause a number of further “collateral” objectives such as “injury, fear, terror and chaos”.

Expert evidence suggested the Radiation Project, which was aimed at terrorising 500 people, would have been unlikely to kill but would cause “considerable fear, panic and social disruption”.

Barot is said to have made notes of his plans in a Paperchase notebook and to have made a video of targets in New York. The projects, titled “Rough Presentation” and “Final Presentation” were saved on a computer.

Seven other men also face charges of conspiracy to murder. They deny the charges.

The prosecution has accepted that there is no evidence to contradict the defence assertion that no funding had been received and no bomb-making equipment or vehicles had been purchased.

Barot, 34, yesterday became the first Muslim accused of plotting explosions in this country to plead guilty. He was arrested in August 2004.

A short man, with a neatly clipped beard, he stood up and answered clearly “I plead guilty” when the charge of conspiracy to murder was put to him yesterday.

He spent much of the hearing tapping notes into a laptop computer.

Quietly spoken and smartly dressed, Barot is not the usual image of a terrorist. He was born a Hindu and brought up in a north London suburb by middle-class parents.

Family friends have told The Daily Telegraph how Barot’s father, a banker from Nairobi, fled the worsening situation for Asians in Kenya in 1973, when Dhiren was two.

Manu Barot and his wife Bhartia arrived in Britain with Dhiren and his older sister and moved into a neat 1930s semi-detached home in a cul–de-sac in Kingsbury.

While Manu had been a successful professional in Kenya, in Britain his qualifications were worthless and he was forced to turn to factory work while his wife worked in a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Dhiren and his sister, three years his senior, attended a successful local high school and worked hard. She went on to university and became a teacher.

Dhiren was less academic but was known for his interest in fashion and music.

He planned to become a travel agent after leaving school and to work in hotel management and travel the world.

In fact, he became increasingly interested in Islam and converted when he was 20, prompting a rift with his father, who by then was suffering from a heart condition.

Barot travelled to Pakistani-controlled Kashmir to “investigate the duty of jihad”.

He trained with one of the groups fighting Indian troops in the region and said later that he had “witnessed a side of Islam which cannot be found in classrooms”.

The trial continues. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1531326/Muslim-was-planning-dirty-bomb-attack-in-UK.html

BBC NEWS | UK | Muslim convert who plotted terror – Muslim convert who plotted terror

Barot attended terrorism training camps Dhiren Barot was raised a Hindu in the UK before he converted to Islam. Woolwich Crown Court heard that Barot, 34, from Kingsbury in north-west London, who admitted conspiracy to murder last month, planned to detonate a dirty bomb and launch an attack on London’s Tube.

Edmund Lawson QC, prosecuting, told the court that Barot was born in India in December 1971, and was brought to the UK by his parents the following year.

He attained GCSEs at school in Kingsbury and after leaving in 1988 obtained a City and Guilds in tourism.

His only sustained time in work was as an airline ticket clerk in Piccadilly, central London, from 1991 to 1995, and he later put in for a transfer to Heathrow but his application was turned down, Mr Lawson said.

Overseas trip

Then, in September 1995, he told his employers he was going on a “long overseas trip”.

Mr Lawson said investigations revealed he went for a long training session at a terrorist camp in Pakistan.

He inferred Barot was being financially supported somehow, as he did not seek social security benefits at any time.

BAROT TERROR CASE Planned radioactive “dirty” bomb Proposed using petrol tanker for explosion Planned train attacks, including Heathrow Express and Tube under Thames…

Bomb plotter jailed for life Other jobs he appears to have had were as a night porter at luxury apartment blocks in London and he may have also worked for a company called Phone City, Mr Lawson added.

The QC said Barot appeared to have no fixed address in the UK, and he moved frequently from one house to another.

That would have been consistent with anti-surveillance activities, Mr Lawson said.

He said Barot wrote a book published in 1999 called The Army Of Madinah under the name Esa al-Hindi, in which it said Barot converted to Islam at the age of 20.

Mr Lawson told how Barot also had a history of “losing” his passports, and said that several times his documents were reported missing before others were applied for.

Weapons notebook

Barot received extensive terror training in the use of weapons and explosives, first going to Pakistan for terrorist purposes in October 1995.

He went to the disputed territory of Kashmir and then to a mountainous area called Kotti for many months.

Detailed notes which he made while there in a notebook were later recovered by police in a garage.

The notebook referred to Kalashnikov and AK47 weapons, grenades, various chemicals including sulphuric acid, poisons, a bomb containing TNT and sulphuric acid, and the preparation of nitro-glycerine.

It also featured Molotov cocktails and napalm bombs, and a section on “how to blow up a bridge”.

Poison recipes

Parts of the notebook depicting a “basic design for a phosphorous bomb” were shown on TV screens in court.

There were also details on the effects and manufacture of poisons including cyanide and ricin.

Mr Lawson said it featured poison recipes including one for botulinum toxin, “the most toxic substance known to man”.

After Barot was given a life sentence, Peter Clarke, the head of the Metropolitan Police’s Anti-Terrorist branch, said there was a “wealth of evidence” he was a “very important figure” within al-Qaeda.

He told the BBC “We believe that early in 2004, he presented his plans to al-Qaeda leadership with the intention of getting the permission and the resources to mount attacks in the United Kingdom.”

The minimum 40-year tariff means Barot will be almost 75 by the time he is released from prison. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6121084.stm

LIQUID BOMB TO KILL THOUSANDS

Agent infiltrated terror cell, U.S. says Air travel in chaos after plot to bomb airliners exposed

Friday, August 11, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Terrorists were in the “final stages” of a plot to simultaneously blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S., sending the planes and thousands of passengers into the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said … http://edition.cnn.com/2006/US/08/10/us.security/index.html

British Muslims ‘planned to kill thousands by bringing down SEVEN transatlantic airliners in one go with liquid bombs’By CHARLOTTE GILL and SAM GREENHILL Last updated at 13:30 04 April 2008

A gang of British Muslims planned to blow up seven planes within hours in the biggest terrorist atrocity since 9/11, a court heard yesterday. Two thousand passengers would have died in the plot by eight fanatics working “in the name of Islam”, the jury was told. It could have involved up to 18 suicide bombers. And they were almost ready to strike. The jets they targeted would all have been bound from Heathrow to cities in the U.S. and Canada, it was claimed. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-555465/British-Muslims-planned-kill-thousands-bringing-SEVEN-transatlantic-airliners-liquid-bombs.html

Muslim men plotted to down 7 planes Associated Press

Last Updated: 5:41 PM, September 7, 2009

LONDON — Three British Muslims were convicted Monday of plotting to murder thousands by downing at least seven trans-Atlantic airliners in simultaneous attacks designed by al-Qaida to be the deadliest terrorist strike since Sept. 11, 2001.

Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 28, Assad Sarwar, 29, and Tanvir Hussain, 28 were found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court in London of leading a plan to detonate bombs on aircraft bound for the United States and Canada, using liquid explosives hidden in soda bottles.

Four other men were acquitted of conspiring to bomb airliners, but admitted lesser charges — and in one case conspiracy to murder. An eighth man was cleared completely.

Tanvir Hussain, 28, was found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court, London on 07 September 2009 of conspiring to activate bombs disguised as drinks. Hussain was one of three men to have been found guilty of plotting to kill thousands of people by blowing up planes from London to North America with home-made liquid bombs. The men’s arrests in 2006 led to new airport restrictions on liquids and brought chaos to travellers. The case brought sweeping new restrictions for air passengers, including limits on the amount of liquids and gels they can take carry on board. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/international/item_8Me0bP3w1l5QKZuMU1rqNJ

ITALIAN CATHEDRAL ATTACK ON CHRISTMAS

Italy: Plot to blow up Milan Cathedral Islam in Europe December 4 2008

Ilhami is not the first ‘peace activist’ to plan terror attacks. Two Moroccans arrested in Italy yesterday wanted to blow up the Milan Cathedral on Christmas.

They hoped an attack during the busy holiday would cost dozens of lives. This according to tapped phone calls, reports La Repubblica.

The two belonged to an Islamic terror cell which had been followed by the Italian police already for months. “The plot was discovered yet before the suspects could get explosives,” says the Italian minister of Internal Affairs, Roberto Maroni, in response.

Rachid Ilhami (31) and Abdelkader Ghafir (43) were arrested in Giussano, a city 25km away from Milan. The detectives gathered from tapped phone calls and confiscated computer files that the two also prepared attacks on a supermarket and a police bureau. They are arrested on suspicion of terrorism and eventual cooperation with al-Qaeda.

Ilhami had been living since he was ten in Italy. He is married and has two children. He worked as a blacksmith and in his free time worked in a center for peace activities, in the area of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s villa, according to Corriere della Sera. http://europenews.dk/en/node/16911

EIFFEL TOWER

Terror plot to blow up Eiffel Tower uncoveredBy IAN SPARKS Last updated at 22:26 11 January 2008

The plot to blow up the Eiffel Tower was uncovered through intercepted phone calls A plot by Islamic terrorists to blow up the Eiffel Tower has been uncovered. A scrambled short-wave radio conversation exposing the planned attack on the world’s most visited monument was picked up by Portuguese air traffic controllers and passed on to French spy chiefs. The 1,060ft high tower has more than six million visitors a year – an average of more than 16,000 a day. A successful strike on the 7,500 ton iron tower, which was looked down on Paris since 1889, would be a French 9/11 and could cost thousands of lives. The threat was uncovered in a “vague and muffled” radio conversation picked up by air traffic controllers in Lisbon on Thursday.

It comes after a spate of other threats made in recent days on the websites linked to Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda terror network, calling for the “brothers of Islam to strike Paris”. A police source close to France’s DST intelligance agency said last night: “It was a muffled conversation in Arabic that was passed on to us as a matter of course, but our analysts clearly identified the threat. “The sheer number of visitors going up the tower every day means a bomb blowing up there could cause the most massive loss of life. We’ve been at our red security alert for several months.” The source added: “Security at the tower was already tight, but is now being stepped up.” Paris’s socialist mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, has been given extra security protection after an Islamist website used by Al Qaeda members listed him as a target. Mr Delanoe – one of France’s few openly gay politicians – was stabbed in an anti-gay attack in 2002. In January 2005, French intelligence officers arrested three French-born Algerians suspected of plotting to blow up the Eiffel Tower. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-507760/Terror-plot-blow-Eiffel-Tower-uncovered.html

FBI Arrests Three Men in Terror Plot that Targeted New York
Documents Allege NYPD Informant Went Bad, Tipped Off Subjects to Surveillance

By BRIAN ROSS, RICHARD ESPOSITO and CLAYTON SANDELL
Sept. 20, 2009

The FBI arrested three men overnight on charges they lied to federal agents during an investigation of a terror plot against New York City that authorities say was “the real deal.”

Authorities arrest three suspects in connection to an alleged terror plot.

Agents in Denver arrested Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year old airport shuttle driver, who authorities say appears to be the ringleader of the alleged plot. Also charged with lying to the FBI was Zazi’s father, Mohammed Zazi.

In New York, the FBI arrested the leader of a Queens mosque, Ahmad Afzali, who authorities allege had been a New York police department informant but “went bad” and tipped off Zazi, his father and others to the investigation.

Afzali’s alleged double cross compromised the case and led the FBI to move in on the suspects much earlier than they had wanted and led to extreme tensions between the Denver office of the FBI and the NYPD. One law enforcement official said the NYPD had been specifically asked not to reveal the investigation to its informants, but went ahead anyway.

In affidavits filed in connection with the arrests, agents say they discovered nine pages of handwritten notes in Zazi’s computer with details on how to make a homemade bomb.

According to the affidavit, Zazi initially denied knowing anything about the notes when he was shown them by the FBI during a three day interrogation.

Later, Zazi admitted the notes were his and that he attended an al Qaeda training camp in Pakistan and received instructions on weapons and explosives.

Law enforcement and intelligence officials say the case began in 2008 when the CIA twice picked up on Zazi’s presence in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, a place often used by al Qaeda to arrange meetings with foreigners.

Zazi maintained publicly that he had no ties to al Qaeda and had gone to Peshawar only to visit his wife.

According to the FBI affidavits, Zazi went to Peshawar in Aug. 2008 and again in Jan. 2009.

Law enforcement officials told ABCNews.com that electronic intercepts revealed Zazi had sent text messages suggesting, in code, the plot was nearing the attack stage. “The wedding cake is ready,” Zazi allegedly wrote.

The three men are scheduled to appear in court Monday morning on the charges, which authorities say are designed to keep them in custody while more serious charges are considered.

The Hunt for a Hidden Bomb Factory
Have authorities really shut down an alleged New York terror plot?

Days after local police and federal agents busted up an alleged terror plot targeting public transportation in the New York area, law enforcement and counterterrorism officials still aren’t sure if they have captured all of the suspects who might have been in on the plan. Contacted by NEWSWEEK, some officials say they believe U.S. agencies “successfully disrupted” the plot with the arrests last weekend of two men in Denver and one in Queens, New York. But other officials say that more suspects are being sought, and that urgent efforts are continuing to locate what investigators fear could be a bomb factory or an explosives stockpile.

AGAINST SYNAGOGUES & US PLANES

FBI foils terror plot

WASHINGTON, May 21 (UPI) — The FBI and other U.S. law enforcement agencies have foiled a would-be terror plot to blow up synagogues and shoot down U.S. military aircraft. The case was striking not only because of the efficiency of the FBI but also because the alleged plotters — three Americans and one Haitian — were jailhouse converts to Islam, the New York Daily News reported.

The four men were arrested after allegedly planting bombs outside two synagogues. They had also bought what they thought was a Stinger missile. All of the ordnance came from undercover law enforcement agents and was fake.

James Cromitie, also known as “Abdul Rahman,” David Williams, also known as “Daoud” and “DL,” Onta Williams, also known as “Hamza,” and Laguerre Payen, also known as “Amin” and “Almondo,” now face charges “arising from a plot to detonate explosives near a synagogue in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York, and to shoot military planes located at the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport in Newburgh, New York, with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles,” the FBI said in a statement.

However, “In their efforts to obtain weapons, the defendants dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, and the FBI and other agencies … (made sure they only received) an inactive missile and inert explosives,” the statement said.

The charges were filed in a criminal complaint in White Plains federal court. They “include conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction in the United States and conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles,” the FBI said.

Security analysts have long expressed their concern that extreme Islamist activists have been active in U.S. prisons seeking to convert inmates they could use to carry out terror attacks within the United States. Such converts would in effect serve as “Trojan horses.” They would be recruited within the country and would not have to go through the rigorous systems of border security, monitoring and surveillance that foreign nationals visiting the United States have had to undergo since the al-Qaida terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, killed around 3,000 Americans.

The FBI and other U.S. security agencies have often been criticized for carrying out such “sting” operations. Critics allege that the conspiracies revealed could not have been developed as seriously if it were not for the encouragement that undercover agents and informers controlled by the law enforcement agencies had given the plotters.

However, defenders of such tactics reply that they do indeed work, and that no terrorist attacks have been carried out in the past seven and half years on U.S. soil precisely because these operations have been so effective in attracting would-be terrorists who would certainly have found their arms in other ways.

The same day the arrest of the four men was announced, U.S. President Barack Obama gave a speech on national security at the National Archives in Washington, reaffirming his determination to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

As part of Obama’s new policy on operating through established legal and constitutional channels to seek the conviction of terror suspects, the Justice Department announced that Gitmo detainee Ahmed Ghailani, suspected of having a role in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa, will face trial in a federal court in New York. That would be the first civilian court case for a “high-value detainee” from Guantanamo Bay.

Obama’s Gitmo plan has drawn harsh words — and votes — from the Democrat-controlled 111th Congress, which has refused Obama’s request for $80 million to close the prison — at least until details of what will happen with the prisoners there are released.

It didn’t help that FBI Director Robert Mueller told a House of Representatives committee that moving detainees to the United States could create security issues and increase the chance of an attack on U.S. soil.

Equally concerning for the White House is the criticism it has received when the administration has taken a position, such as the reversal on the release of alleged torture photos, that appears more in line with the Bush administration than Obama supporters like or that candidate Obama espoused a few short months ago.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney gave a very different speech, also on national security, at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington Thursday. Cheney was outspoken in defending the widely criticized practice of “waterboarding” some terror suspects to get crucial information out of them and has been roundly critical of Obama’s move on this issue.

Cheney’s partisan and controversial — but clear and uncompromising — speech and the arrests of the four terror suspects in New York state all highlighted the pitfalls and complexities Obama has to navigate in reforming the U.S. legal system while continuing to defend the American people from the very real threat of terrorist conspiracies designed to kill and maim them. The debate will continue.

The so-called shoe bomber, Richard Reid, had only about 50 grams kin his failed attempt in 2001 to blow up a U.S.-bound jet. Yesterday’s bomb failed because the detonator may have been too small or was not in “proper contact” with the explosive material, investigators told ABC News.

POPE ASSASSINATION

Italy Expelled Moroccans On Suspicion of Pope Plot May 14, 2010 by national Reuters reports two Moroccan students deported from Italy last month were suspected of plotting to assassinate Pope Benedict, an Interior Ministry source said on Friday.

Mohamed Hlal, 26, and Ahmed Errahmouni, 22, students at the University for Foreigners in the central Italian city of Perugia, had been under surveillance by anti-terrorist police for months before they were expelled on April 29.

“During their inquiry, investigators found evidence suggesting the two (suspects) were plotting an attack on the pope,” said the source.

An interior ministry statement issued at the time of their deportation said they were being expelled under prevention of terrorism laws.

Six other foreign students, suspected of contacts with militant Islamic groups, are still under investigation. http://www.nationalterroralert.com/updates/2010/05/14/italy-expelled-moroccans-on-suspicion-of-pope-plot/

America’s Earliest Terrorists

Lessons from America’s first war against Islamic terror.

December 16, 2005, 9:55 a.m.
By Joshua E. London
At the dawn of a new century, a newly elected United States president was forced to confront a grave threat to the nation — an escalating series of unprovoked attacks on Americans by Muslim terrorists. Worse still, these Islamic partisans operated under the protection and sponsorship of rogue Arab states ruled by ruthless and cunning dictators.
Sluggish in recognizing the full nature of the threat, America entered the war well after the enemy’s call to arms. Poorly planned and feebly executed, the American effort proceeded badly and at great expense — resulting in a hastily negotiated peace and an equally hasty declaration of victory.
As timely and familiar as these events may seem, they occurred more than two centuries ago. The president was Thomas Jefferson, and the terrorists were the Barbary pirates. Unfortunately, many of the easy lessons to be plucked from this experience have yet to be fully learned.
The Barbary states, modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, are collectively known to the Arab world as the Maghrib (“Land of Sunset”), denoting Islam’s territorial holdings west of Egypt. With the advance of Mohammed’s armies into the Christian Levant in the seventh century, the Mediterranean was slowly transformed into the backwater frontier of the battles between crescent and cross. Battles raged on both land and sea, and religious piracy flourished.
The Maghrib served as a staging ground for Muslim piracy throughout the Mediterranean, and even parts of the Atlantic. America’s struggle with the terror of Muslim piracy from the Barbary states began soon after the 13 colonies declared their independence from Britain in 1776, and continued for roughly four decades, finally ending in 1815.
Although there is much in the history of America’s wars with the Barbary pirates that is of direct relevance to the current “war on terror,” one aspect seems particularly instructive to informing our understanding of contemporary Islamic terrorists. Very simply put, the Barbary pirates were committed, militant Muslims who meant to do exactly what they said.
Take, for example, the 1786 meeting in London of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the Tripolitan ambassador to Britain. As American ambassadors to France and Britain respectively, Jefferson and Adams met with Ambassador Adja to negotiate a peace treaty and protect the United States from the threat of Barbary piracy.
These future United States presidents questioned the ambassador as to why his government was so hostile to the new American republic even though America had done nothing to provoke any such animosity. Ambassador Adja answered them, as they reported to the Continental Congress, “that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

Sound familiar?
The candor of that Tripolitan ambassador is admirable in its way, but it certainly foreshadows the equally forthright declarations of, say, the Shiite Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the 1980s and the Sunni Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, not to mention the many pronouncements of their various minions, admirers, and followers. Note that America’s Barbary experience took place well before colonialism entered the lands of Islam, before there were any oil interests dragging the U.S. into the fray, and long before the founding of the state of Israel.
America became entangled in the Islamic world and was dragged into a war with the Barbary states simply because of the religious obligation within Islam to bring belief to those who do not share it. This is not something limited to “radical” or “fundamentalist” Muslims.
Which is not to say that such obligations lead inevitably to physical conflict, at least not in principle. After all peaceful proselytizing among various religious groups continues apace throughout the world, but within the teachings of Islam, and the history of Muslims, this is a well-established militant thread.
The Islamic basis for piracy in the Mediterranean was an old doctrine relating to the physical or armed jihad, or struggle.
To Muslims in the heyday of Barbary piracy, there were, at least in principle, only two forces at play in the world: the Dar al-Islam, or House of Islam, and the Dar al-Harb, or House of War. The House of Islam meant Muslim governance and the unrivaled authority of the sharia, Islam’s complex system of holy law. The House of War was simply everything that fell outside of the House of Islam — that area of the globe not under Muslim authority, where the infidel ruled. For Muslims, these two houses were perpetually at war — at least until mankind should finally embrace Allah and his teachings as revealed through his prophet, Mohammed.
The point of jihad is not to convert by force, but to remove the obstacles to the infidels’ conversion so that they shall either convert or become a dhimmi (a non-Muslim who accepts Islamic dominion) and pay the jizya, or poll tax. The goal is to bring all of the Dar al-Harb into the peace of the Dar al-Islam, and to eradicate unbelief. The Koran also promises rewards to those who fight in the jihad, plunder and glory in this world and the delights of paradise in the next.
Although the piratical activities of Barbary genuinely degenerated over the centuries from pure considerations of the glory of jihad to less grandiose visions of booty and state revenues, it is important to remember that the religious foundations of the institution of piracy remained central.
Even after it became commonplace for the pirate captains or their crew to be renegade Europeans, it was essential that these former Christians “turn Turk” and convert to Islam before they could be accorded the honor of engagement in al-jihad fil-bahr, the holy war at sea.
In fact, the peoples of Barbary continued to consider the pirates as holy warriors even after the Barbary rulers began to allow non-religious commitments to command their strategic use of piracy. The changes that the religious institution of piracy underwent were natural, if pathological. Just as the concept of jihad is invoked by Muslim terrorists today to legitimize suicide bombings of noncombatants for political gain, so too al-jihad fil-bahr, the holy war at sea, served as the cornerstone of the Barbary states’ interaction with Christendom.

In times of conflict, America tends to focus on personalities over ideas or movements, trying to play the man, not the board — as if capturing or killing Osama bin Laden, for example, would instantly end the present conflict. But such thinking loses sight of the fact that ideas have consequences. If one believes that God commands something, this belief is not likely to dissipate just because the person who elucidated it has been silenced. Islam, as a faith, is as essential a feature of the terrorist threat today as it was of the Barbary piracy over two centuries ago.
The Barbary pirates were not a “radical” or “fundamentalist” sect that had twisted religious doctrine for power and politics, or that came to recast aspects of their faith out of some form of insanity. They were simply a North African warrior caste involved in an armed jihad — a mainstream Muslim doctrine. This is how the Muslims understood Barbary piracy and armed jihad at the time, and, indeed, how the physical jihad has been understood since Mohammed revealed it as the prophecy of Allah.
Obviously, and thankfully, not every Muslim is obligated, or even really inclined, to take up this jihad. Indeed, many Muslims are loath to personally embrace this physical struggle. But that does not mean they are all opposed to such a struggle any more than the choice of many Westerners not to join the police force or the armed services means they do not support those institutions.
Whether “insurgents” are fighting in Iraq or “rebels” and “militants” are skirmishing in Chechnya or Hamas “activists” are detonating themselves in Israel, Westerners seem unwilling to bring attention to the most salient feature of all these groups: They claim to be acting in the name of Islam.
It is very easy to chalk it all up to regional squabbles, economic depression, racism, or post-colonial nationalistic self-determinism. Such explanations undoubtedly enter into part of the equation — they are already part of the propaganda that clouds contemporary analysis. But as Thomas Jefferson and John Adams came to learn back in 1786, the situation becomes a lot clearer when you listen to the stated intentions and motivations of the terrorists and take them at face value.

Sally Rovers incident, at the height of North African Arab Muslim pirates’ crimes against Christians, mainly British

Britain’s 200-year jihad

On my travels for the past few days, I have been reading a book which tells the story of a quite astonishing part of British history of which I was previously unaware. In ‘White Gold’, Giles Milton records the appalling details — gleaned,it appears, from a wealth of historical documents including diaries and letters — of a seaborne Islamic jihad against Britain which lasted for no less than two centuries.

From the early seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, thousands of British men women and children were kidnapped by Arab corsairs and sold into slavery in Morocco where they were kept in conditions of unspeakable barbarism. The astounding thing is that these British victims were not merely seized at sea where they ran the gauntlet of such pirates in places such as the Straits of Gibraltar. They were actually abducted from Britain itself.

Corsairs from a place in Morocco called Sale — who became known in Britain as the ‘Sally Rovers’ — sailed up the Cornish coast in July 1625, for example, came ashore dressed in djellabas and wielding damascene scimitars, burst into the parish church at Mount’s Bay and dragged out 60 men women and children whom they shipped off to Morocco. Thousands more Britons were seized from their villages or their ships and dispatched to the hell-holes of the Moroccan slave pens, from where they were forced to work all hours in appalling conditions building the vast palace of the monstrous and psychopathic Sultan, Moulay Ismail, who tortured and butchered them at whim. Most of them perished, but the book records the survival of a tenacious Cornish boy Thomas Pellow, who survived 23 years of this ordeal and whose descendant, Lord Exmouth, finally ended the white slave trade when he destroyed Algiers in 1816.

The book makes clear that this assault upon the British people (and upon Europeans and Americans who were similarly seized) was a jihad. The Sally Rovers, writes Milton, were called ‘al-ghuzat’– the term once used for the soldiers who fought with the Prophet — and were hailed as religious warriors engaged in a holy war against the infidel Christians who were pressurised to convert to Islam under threat of hideous punishment. What is even more striking was the response of the British crown. For almost two centuries, it made only the most ineffectual attempts to rescue its enslaved subjects. Those who had succumbed to the torture and inhumanity of the Sultan and converted to Islam were deemed to be no longer British and therefore outside the scope of any rescue. The pleas of Pellow’s parents were simply brushed aside. Popular outrage forced successive Kings to dispatch a series of feeble emissaries to try to get the Sultan to end this vile traffic and release the slaves, all to no avail.

But this went on for virtually two centuries. For almost 200 years the British state either sat on its hands or wrung them impotently while the Islamic jihad seized, enslaved and butchered its people. And then it appears, this staggering onslaught was all but airbrushed out of our history.

Food for disquieting thought.

‘Pirates of Penzance’ redo? James Zumwalt
Thursday, October 2, 2008
Soon after winning independence from England, the United States faced another war. Muslim pirates operating off North Africa’s Barbary Coast were seizing U.S., as well as European, ships sailing in international waters, holding them for tribute payment or plunder.
In 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, meeting in London with Tripoli’s Muslim ambassador to Britain, inquired as to the reason for such Arab hostility. Acknowledging their attacks were unprovoked, the Tripoli ambassador explained it was their right and duty under the Koran as faithful Muslim followers to plunder and enslave the unfaithful – with those Muslims dying in the process going to paradise. To stop the attacks, the United States initially agreed to pay the Barbary pirates tribute, equal to about 20 percent of government revenues. Only later did an indignant United States launch two wars against them, ending in victory in 1815 and no further payments. European nations, acting individually and collectively, suppressed pirate activity as well, with the French conquest of Algiers in 1830 providing the last nail in the Barbary Pirates’ coffin.
Today, Muslim pirates again sail the seas off Africa’s coast. Mostly Somalis, these pirates have already attacked more than 60 ships this year in the vicinity of the Gulf of Aden – almost 5 times more than occurred all last year. Pirates gain confidence as owners prove willing to pay ransoms for the safe return of ships and crews, much like the United States first did with the Barbary Pirates.

The evil is called Islamism or Islamofascism

The evil is called Islamism or Islamofascism A Date that will live in Infamy
By Alan Caruba Sunday, December 7, 2008
December 7, 1941, “A date that will live infamy” is a fading memory for those alive at the time and most certainly for those born since that day. For most Americans I suspect it is just a date they may have read about in a high school history book or seen dramatized in documentaries or films. It was, if you are still trying to recall its significance, the day the Empire of Japan attacked the U.S. fleet in Pearl Harbor. It was the date that Franklin Delano Roosevelt referred to in his speech to Congress calling for a Declaration of War against, not only Japan, but the Nazi regime and its Axis partner, Italy. It was the date when the term World War took on a whole new meaning beyond the WWI trenches in France.
In Hawaii, when I rode out to visit the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor, the thing I noticed was that I was sharing the ferry with dozens of Japanese tourists. It had never occurred to me that it was, of course, part of their history as well. I recall their pausing before the wall with the names of the sailors still entombed below to offer prayers for them. That is what peace is all about. The cliché is that those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. It is a cliché because it is true. http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/6779

Islamic bigotry is still bigotry

September 4, 2008

Islamic bigotry is still bigotry
Last Updated: 12:01am BST 31/08/2008

In January 2007, Channel 4 broadcast Undercover Mosque, an investigation into what was being preached in mainstream mosques in Britain. The results were shocking: imams were shown praising the murder of British soldiers, attacking democracy, and condemning attempts to integrate Muslims into British society.

The reaction to that programme proved the widespread reluctance to accept the reality of what takes place under the blanket of religion:

Undercover Mosque was condemned for “damaging community relations” by West Midlands Police, who wanted to prosecute the programme makers and Channel 4 under racial hatred laws.

On being told they could not do so, they referred the matter to the Broadcasting Standards Commission. The programme was eventually wholly vindicated. West Midlands Police had to pay Channel 4 more than £100,000 for defaming it.

As we report today, the follow-up to Undercover Mosque is to be broadcast tomorrow.

It shows that – despite all the promises that the books condoning terrorism would be removed, as would the preachers advocating the rigid enforcement of the narrowest interpretration of sharia law and the overthrow of our liberal democracy – violent, intolerant prejudice continues to be preached, this time by women, in centres of “moderate Islam”, such as the Regent’s Park Mosque.

In revealing this, Channel 4 has performed an important public service. Surveys of Muslim opinion reveal the scale of the problem: almost a third of Muslim students believe that killing in the name of religion can be justified, and 40 per cent support the introduction of Sharia law for British Muslims.

News: Preachers of separatism at work inside Britain’s mosques
Channel 4’s programme does not explain how we can diminish this kind of narrow bigotry. But it does make it impossible for anyone to deny the continued existence of extremism in some British mosques. That is the critical first step necessary for finding policies which will combat it.
