Rousing Muslim bigotry
JEFF JACOBY
By Jeff Jacoby, 10/23/2003
FOR MONTHS following the atrocities of 9/11, US officials from President Bush on down repeatedly declared that Islam is a religion of peace and that no American should think ill of Muslims or their religion because of the terrorist attacks. In fact, Bush said, any Americans who would lash out at Muslims or attempt to intimidate them “represent the worst of humankind, and they should be ashamed of that kind of behavior.”
The president had occasion to return to the subject of religious bigotry this week, but it was Muslim hatred — not hatred of Muslims — that decency rrrrequired him to condemn. At a gathering in Thailand, Bush made a point of telling Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad that he had been “wrong and divisive” when he uncorked a toxic rant against the world’s Jews last week.
Bush’s conversations with foreign leaders are not usually publicized, but this time the White House spokesman related the president’s words: “It stands squarely against what I believe in.”
Mahathir delivered his diatribe at an Islamic summit meeting on Oct. 16. His theme was the anti-Semite’s timeless plaint: The Jews are few but crafty, and the world is in their grip.
“The Europeans killed 6 million Jews out of 12 million, but today the Jews rule the world by proxy,” Mahathir told the leaders of 57 Muslim nations. “They get others to fight and die for them.” He lamented that Jews are an enemy “who think. They survived 2,000 years of pogroms not by hitting back, but by thinking. They invented . . . socialism, communism, human rights, and democracy so that persecuting them would appear to be wrong — so they may enjoy equal rights with others. With these they have now gained control of the most powerful countries.”
And how should the world’s Muslims deal with the Jews? Mahathir urged them to learn from Mohammed’s example — to buy time by making “strategic retreats” and signing peace accords, then building up their strength until they are ready to launch a “counterattack” that will lead to “final victory.”
Mahathir’s Judeophobia is an old story. More than 30 years ago he wrote: “The Jews . . . are not merely hook-nosed but understand money instinctively.” He has blasted Jews as “monsters”; in 1994 his government banned the movie “Schindler’s List” for being too pro-Jewish. When the Malaysian currency collapsed in 1997, Mahathir blamed it on George Soros, an American investor. “We do not want to say that this is a plot by the Jews,” he thundered at a rally, “but in reality it is a Jew who triggered the currency plunge — and coincidentally Soros is a Jew.”
The Bush administration tried to cast Mahathir’s latest screed as simply the invective of a lone bigot. “The comments were hateful,” Bush’s national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, told reporters, adding “I do not think they are emblematic of the Muslim world.”
Would that were true. Unfortunately, while many in the West voiced outrage at Mahathir’s poisonous remarks, the Muslim world’s official reaction ranged from utter indifference to hearty approval.
The audience to whom Mahathir spoke — the presidents, kings, and emirs of the nations that make up the Organization of the Islamic Conference — rewarded him with a standing ovation. The applauders included not only the Muslim world’s dictatorial fanatics but also its reputed moderates, including President Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia, General Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, and Jordan’s King Abdullah.
Even America’s Muslim allies and clients admired Mahathir’s views. The foreign minister of Egypt — a country that receives $2 billion a year in US aid — pronounced the speech “a very, very wisssse assessment.” Hamid Karzai, the US-installed president of Afghanistan, praised it as “an eye-opener to a lot of us and . . . what the Islamic world should do.”
Mahathir’s speech raised no storm of controversy among most Muslims because the Muslim world by and large has no problem with anti-Semitism. Even in the United States there was little shocked repudiation of Mahathir’s venom by American Muslim leaders. A Nexis search turns up just one mild quibble: When CNN invited the head of CAIR, the Council on American Islamic Relations, to comment, he said only that he doesn’t believe Jews run the world, “so I see that statement as a misguided opinion.”
On Tuesday I asked six American Muslim organizations — CAIR, the American Muslim Association, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Islamic Institute, the Islamic Society of North America, and the Muslim Public Affairs Council — whether they had any reaction to Mahathir’s words. Three never replied; two replied by saying they had no comment. Only MPAC condemned Mahathir for his “extremely offensive, anti-Semitic comments.”

Clerics Promoting Islamic Bigotry
These examples of prejudice are almost classic; we hear and read them so
often. If anyone wants to deny that antisemitism exists all they need to
do is speak to some of these clerics or go online. How do you overcome
prejudice which is entrenched so indelibly and are guiding principles
evoked as doctrine by some Islamic clerics?

Islamic bigotry is still bigotry

In January 2007, Channel 4 broadcast Undercover Mosque, an investigation into what was being preached in mainstream mosques in Britain. The results were shocking: imams were shown praising the murder of British soldiers, attacking democracy, and condemning attempts to integrate Muslims into British society.
The reaction to that programme proved the widespread reluctance to accept the reality of what takes place under the blanket of religion:
Undercover Mosque was condemned for “damaging community relations” by West Midlands Police, who wanted to prosecute the programme makers and Channel 4 under racial hatred laws.
On being told they could not do so, they referred the matter to the Broadcasting Standards Commission. The programme was eventually wholly vindicated. West Midlands Police had to pay Channel 4 more than £100,000 for defaming it.
As we report today, the follow-up to Undercover Mosque is to be broadcast tomorrow.
It shows that – despite all the promises that the books condoning terrorism would be removed, as would the preachers advocating the rigid enforcement of the narrowest interpretration of sharia law and the overthrow of our liberal democracy – violent, intolerant prejudice continues to be preached, this time by women, in centres of “moderate Islam”, such as the Regent’s Park Mosque.
In revealing this, Channel 4 has performed an important public service. Surveys of Muslim opinion reveal the scale of the problem: almost a third of Muslim students believe that killing in the name of religion can be justified, and 40 per cent support the introduction of Sharia law for British Muslims.
News: Preachers of separatism at work inside Britain’s mosques
Channel 4’s programme does not explain how we can diminish this kind of narrow bigotry. But it does make it impossible for anyone to deny the continued existence of extremism in some British mosques. That is the critical first step necessary for finding policies which will combat it.

Arab racism, Islamic bigotry and discriminatory practices are the most divisive issues in the Sudan because they are the major factors in the marginalisation of the majority non-Arab Sudanese in the peripheries.

Islamic Hatred in the Heartland … Khalid Yasin is one of the most notorious Islamic hate sheikhs in the world today. He had been widely condemned from the US to Britain to Australia for his virulent Wahhabist extremism, his intense anti-Americanism (despite the fact that he is an American-born convert), his justification of Islamic terrorism, his wild-eyed conspiracy theories, and his outright racial and religious bigotry. And an Australian news investigation found that Yasin had claimed academic degrees that the schools had no record or, and also discovered that he had engaged in outright fraud in his building his international Islamic media empire.

Islamic Bigotry
The political left has a public relations problem. It is in bed with the Islamo-Fascists who are attacking us. It runs interference for them; it tries to persuade Americans that no threat exists; and it labels anyone who says differently an “Islamo-phobe” and a “racist.”

What role does bigotry play in the Arab-Israeli conflict?
Al Da’wa (The Mission), a prominent Islamic publication, identifies the status of Israel with the status of the individual Jew. Here, Israel is merely the Jew in macrocosm:
“The race is corrupt at the root, full of duplicity, and the Muslims have everything to lose in seeking to deal with them; they must be exterminated.”
Following are some recent statements by senior PA officials, all of which are flagrantly anti-Jewish and several of which incorporate sordid anti-Jewish stereotypes…
– Palestinian representative Nabil Ramlawi at a session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Jerusalem Post, March 17 1997.
The theme of Palestine as the grave of Israel and of the Jews in general is a persistent motif in Arab orientations toward Israel. Here the following claim, made by Dr. Yahya al-Rakhawi in Al-Akhbar, the organ of Egypt’s Liberal Party, on July 19, 1982, is typical:
“When the State of Israel was established and…was recognized by many, in both East and West, one of the reasons for this recognition was the desire of the people in the East and West to get rid of as many as possible of the representatives of that human error known as the Jews. Behind this motive was another, secret purpose: to concentrate them in one place, so that it would be easier to strike at the right moment.”
The Peel Commission Report stated in 1937 [Q: When was Israel established? A: 1948] that the conflict between the Arabs’ and the Jews’ aspirations is “irrepressible” and “irreconcilable” and that it is “difficult to be an Arab patriot and not to hate the Jews.”
The hatred never subsides. It is developed and nurtured every hour, every day through all possible means. It is encouraged in kindergartens, schools and universities where the Arab children and youngsters learn that the Jews are their enemies. It is preached in mosques where the “Zionist entity” is presented as an eternal threat to the Moslem world. It is flourishing in refugee camps where the Jews are known as “the usurpers and barbarians that have expelled the ‘poor’ Palestinian Arabs from their homes.” It is pouring like venom from newspaper pages in every Arab country.
New blood libels are created and the old ones are revived. The Arab world has an enemy–Israel. Anything bad that is happening is blamed on Israel. This is why, after the decision of the German government to reconsider its ties with Iran, due to killings in Germany of members of the Iranian opposition, a demonstration several hundred thousand people strong was staged in Iran under a slogan, “Death to Israel!”

Iraqi Author ‘Aref ‘Alwan: The Jews Have an Historic Right to Palestine…
‘Alwan writes that the Arab League is to blame for the refusal to recognize the 1947 U.N. partition plan, for starting a war to prevent its implementation, and for the results of that war, which the Arabs call the Nakba (disaster). He points an accusing finger at
the Arab regimes, the Arab League, and the educated circles in the Arab world, saying that they had all
used the term “nakba” to direct popular consciousness toward a cultural tradition that neither accepts the other side nor recognizes its rights –
thereby promoting bigotry, violence and extremism. He also claims that there have been attempts to rewrite Palestinian history, in order to deny any connection between it and the Jewish people…
